The Patient as a Partner
Help us to help you with your treatment
With regard to restoring your health, you can significantly contribute by strictly observing the instructions of doctors and health care staff. To be able to do so, it is of crucial importance to know the reason why certain instructions have been issued, and why you are supposed to heed certain advice. It is an important pre-condition, to precisely know the illness that has befallen you or to know, what type of examinations will be required in order to allow profound diagnosis. However, you must also know, what measures are taken to effectively fight your illness - you are even legally entitled to this information! Apart from this legally guaranteed right, it is our long-time experience that only patients who are very conscious of their illness can develop a true understanding for the therapy required. The medical term for this is 'compliance'. We rather talk to you then talk about it. So, if you are not clear on some points or information, please ask. Your questions are just as important to us as may be our answers for you!
Patient's understanding and consent to an operation
As a rule, every major medical intervention is only possible after the relevant patient has given his or her consent. The medical care provider (your doctor) is also obliged to obtain the patient's consent for such an intervention. To be able to give your consent, you have to precisely know the reason why a certain intervention is to be carried out and the consequences and adverse effects you may have to face with regard to such an intervention. It is your doctor's obligation to give you the relevant information. In case you are not quite clear on some point or other, do not hesitate and ask again and demand further explanation.
The round of the ward - visit of the special kind
When making the round of the ward, your attending physician will come to see you. He/she will discuss with you the medical measures undertaken and the progress in convalescence. However, the physician's round is also a good opportunity for you (the patient) to ask your own questions. We recommend that you do use this opportunity. With regard to health questions of a rather private nature, it is , off course, always possible to ask the doctor for a confidential meeting.
